Just because the temperatures are dropping and the leaves are falling doesn’t mean gardening season is over! November is a great time to tackle several projects that will help your landscape weather winter and look its best when spring arrives.
π³ Fall Is for Planting
November is here and you may be thinking it’s too late to plant? There’s still time! Cooler temperatures can make fall an excellent season for planting many trees and shrubs, giving them time to establish roots before next summer’s heat. As long as the ground is workable and conditions are suitable, you can keep planting. Water thoroughly after planting and during dry spells.
πΌ Plant Now for Years of Color
Want a more colorful flower garden next year? Many hardy perennials, such as Coneflowers, Catmint and Black-Eyed Susan, can be planted in fall. These returning favorites bring beauty to your garden year after year, and fall planting can give them a head start before summer arrives.
Choose a location with the right sunlight and drainage for each variety, and water as needed while plants establish. A little preparation now can mean a healthier, more colorful garden next spring!
πΈ Keep the Color Coming
Your flower beds don’t have to look bare all winter. Pansies and violas are excellent choices for adding color during the cooler months. Ornamental cabbage and kale also bring interesting color and texture to fall and winter landscapes.
π Mulch Now for a Healthier Garden Later
Fall is an excellent time to mulch your landscape! A fresh layer helps insulate plant roots against winter temperature swings, retain moisture during dry spells and reduce soil erosion. As organic mulch breaks down, it also helps enrich the soil.
Aim for a 2 to 3-inch layer, keeping mulch away from tree trunks and plant stems. A little mulch now can help protect your landscape through winter and prepare it for spring growth.
π Give Your Garden a Little Winter Preparation
Before winter settles in, remove diseased plant material and clear heavy layers of leaves from your lawn. Remember that newly planted trees and shrubs may still need water during dry spells, even as temperatures cool.
π± There’s Still Time to Grow!
Gardening doesn’t have to end when summer does. November offers plenty of opportunities to improve your landscape, prepare for spring and enjoy the outdoors a little longer. Grab those gardening gloves and take advantage of pleasant fall days!
