Rose Care
1. Plant new roses using a soil high in organic matter. Water using Plant Starter with B-1 for healthy root formation.
2. In early March fertilize your existing roses with a good rose fertilizer such as Espoma Rose food.
3. A systemic insecticide such as Bayer Advanced All-in-One Rose and Flower Care will kill sucking insects for up to six weeks.
4. When new leaves appear, treat roses with a Rose and Flower dust, or ready to use insecticidal spray or use Bayer All-in-One Rose and Flower Care to control both insects and diseases.
5. Throughout the growing season use a water soluble fertilizer every 7-14 days, or use a granular fertilizer every 6 weeks.
HELPFUL HINTS
Avoid watering roses from the top.
Always cut flowers just above the first five-leaved leaflet.
Remove dead blossoms to encourage new blooms.

Gary's lawn and garden maintenance tips for SUMMER.
1. I would suggest that maintenance should be held to a minimum until the weather cools, and that the cool down is permanent for this season. Along with that I would wait for some fall rain to develop. Plants and grass are so stressed at this time that in my opinion the less done the better. 2. If you must mow, mow high. 3. If you are watering, water weekly applying at least an inch of water or more at a time. This would mean running the sprinkler for about an hour at a time. Watering 20 minutes daily is a waste of water and time. 4. Hold pruning of trees and shrubs to a minimum. It is ok to dead head butterfly bush and crepe myrtles. 5. It is ok to spray where insects are a problem. Be aware that most chemicals do not work well in temperature extremes. 6. Mulching at this time is ok if you can stand the heat. 7. Lime can be applied at this time. It will not hurt the lawn, however it might not do much until rain carries it into the soil.
In the short run there is not much we can do but wait out the weather. I was taught it always rains one day before it’s too late. Once we receive a couple of good soaking rains we will have to assess the damage from the dry weather and then make corrections. |
